O. Nicolai: Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (Fenton)
Otto Nicolai’s Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor
In the summer of 2022, Martin Enger Holm appeared as Fenton in eight staged performances of Otto Nicolai’s comic opera Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor at Eskilstuna Summer Opera in Sweden.
Directed by Andrea Hagman, the production brought Nicolai’s lively adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor to Swedish audiences. Fenton is the opera’s young romantic tenor, whose love story with Anne Page provides the lyrical heart of the comedy.
This engagement marked an important step in Martin’s early professional career, providing valuable stage experience through a full run of public performances in a leading tenor role.
About the Opera
Premiered in 1849, Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor is Otto Nicolai’s best-known work and remains a favourite of the German comic opera repertoire. Based on William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, the opera combines sparkling orchestral writing, memorable ensembles and lyrical solo numbers with fast-paced comedy.
The work continues to be performed by opera companies throughout Europe and is especially appreciated for its elegant balance between humour and romantic lyricism.
The Role of Fenton
Fenton is the opera’s principal lyric tenor role and one of its most beautiful characters. Deeply in love with Anne Page, he represents sincerity and youthful optimism amid the comic misunderstandings surrounding Falstaff and the townspeople of Windsor.
The role features some of Nicolai’s most lyrical music, requiring a warm, expressive tenor voice with elegant phrasing, effortless high notes and a convincing romantic stage presence.
