Hans Gál’s rarely performed opera combines humour, satire and lyrical writing in a story inspired by Chinese folklore. The production brought renewed attention to a work that is seldom staged today.
Martin’s portrayal of Kuli Yang added another distinctive role to his growing international repertoire and reflected his continued work with twentieth-century and lesser-known operatic works.
